Dominican tourism reaches a new record: 11 million visitors

Santo DomingoEFE

The Dominican Republic surpassed the goal of 11 million tourists in 2024 on Sunday, setting another new record, after achieving just over 10 million visitors in 2023.

At an event at Punta Cana airport in the east of the country, Tourism Minister David Collado welcomed the 11 millionth visitor, Bruce Pirt, who arrived in the country with his wife and two daughters on an Air Transat flight from Canada.

Pirt described the Dominican Republic as “a wonderful country” where he celebrated his wedding 20 years ago, the Ministry of Tourism said in a statement.

Collado said that by surpassing this new goal of 11 million visitors, the Dominican Republic has consolidated its position as the leader of tourism in the region.

“Today is a day to celebrate in style, as we have surpassed the barrier of 11 million visitors in one year. Another historic record for Dominican tourism,” said Collado.

All of this, he said, represents 949,000 jobs in 2024, directly and indirectly, and 26 billion dollars of the gross domestic product (GDP), that is, almost 20% of the total.
